She arrives crowned in cempasúchil. La Dama is a calavera poured in cream wax — pearls along her brow, jeweled eyes, marigolds in her hair — resting in a heart of hand-painted clay and ringed with flowers, every one of them shaped and set by hand.

The scent is pumpkin pie the whole way down. Cinnamon and clove open it, a warm nutty bread note fills the middle, and it settles into cotton candy and vanilla.

Hand-poured in small batches in soy wax, so it burns slow and even. Día de Muertos is remembrance, not fright — La Dama is made to hold a place on the ofrenda, the mantel or the table, lit or unlit. And when the wax is gone, the clay heart stays yours.
